What is Depression?

It’s common knowledge that depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses/disorders around the world. 300 million people globally of all ages suffer from depression. 16.2 million adults in the US experienced major depression in the last year. Nearly 50% of all people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and an estimated 15% of the adult population will experience depression at some point in their lifetime. While these statistics might seem gloomy, the very fortunate thing is that depression can be treated. Whether it be through prescribed medication, therapy, exercise, socialising, mindfulness meditation, or all the above; CBD is starting to gain a lot of traction when it comes to managing mental illness/disorders such as depression. Remember that CBD does not cure depression or really any ailment, but people use it to manage the very overwhelming and oftentimes debilitating symptoms that come along with having depression. Just a friendly reminder before we get into the more science-y stuff – You are not your depression! Depression is usually seen as a neurochemical imbalance whereas scientists now believe that it could be due to a neurochemical deficiency. Regardless, it is something you don’t have to live with forever.

Neurotransmitters and depression

There is generally an association that a chemical imbalance in the brain is the direct cause of depression. There are 2 neurotransmitters, when affected during depression – Serotonin and dopamine

Serotonin

Serotonin is a type of chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to another. Of roughly 40 million brain cells, most of them are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. Some of these cells relate to mood, sexual desire or function, appetite, sleep, memory and learning and some social behaviours.

Dopamine

Dopamine is responsible for transmitting signals in the brain between the nerve cells of the brain. These neurons become activated when something good happens usually unexpectedly; It plays a massive role in motivation and reward. Some of the symptoms experienced during depression are linked to a dysfunction within your dopamine system. This can be caused by short- or long-term stress, pain or trauma. In short, the majority of pleasurable experiences involve the release of dopamine. This release is also a big part of addiction, including gambling, drugs and shopping.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

While a deficiency in serotonin and dopamine can be a direct cause for depression, there has been some reports suggesting that a deficiency in the Endocannabinoid System also plays a role. A study that was conducted back in 2011 suggested that a certain amount of deficiency in the activation in the Endocannabinoid system can produce a depressive-like phenotype (characteristics of an organism both physical and psychological from both genetics and environment)

So how can CBD help depression?

In our previous blog – CBD Oil – What is it and how can it be used? We discussed CBD and the role it plays on the Endocannabinoid System. Humans naturally produce cannabinoids, because we have cannabinoid cell receptors; To help the process with activating our naturally occurring cannabinoids, you first need to “unlock” your Endocannabinoid System, CBD has been able to assist with this. Your ECS can release serotonin, which as we know produces a calming and relaxing state. CBD can interact with the cell receptors of the ECS, serotonin and dopamine transmitters.

Along with the 2011 study, reversing the deficiencies with CBD could treat depressive symptoms and regulating serotonin, dopamine and the endocannabinoid systems levels, using CBD to do so is enough to produce similar effects to conventional anti-depressants.

It’s no wonder most people are turning to CBD to help manage their depression. If you have any further questions, please contact us at: info@vapejuicemaster.com

There’s a lot to be said about CBD being used for calming anxiety. It’s not new, however everyday there are numerous reports and stories of people claiming that CBD has helped them tremendously for their anxiety and general wellbeing. So how does CBD work for anxiety sufferers?

Firstly, let’s get into the science of how it works

CBD activates certain receptors in the body such as: vanilloid (TRPV1), adenosine, and serotonin. Once the adenosine receptor is activated, this results in providing anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory in the body. There are also two neurotransmitters that play a massive role in creating a very relaxed sensation and an overall sense of well-being that CBD activates – Dopamine and Norephinephrine.

For some anxiety sufferers, it can be the physical symptoms rather than mental that people find difficult to manage. Physical anxiety symptoms can include:

  • Tightness in the chest
  • A racing heart or heart palpitations
  • Feeling of knots or feeling sick in the stomach
  • Lump in the throat (known as Globus pharynges)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Muscles tension
  • Headaches
  • Rise and drop in temperature.

And so much more.

Mix all of that with a constant racing mind, overthinking and overanalysing, feelings of hopelessness and unable to concentrate or focus on what’s going on around you, it’s no wonder that anxiety can be incredibly debilitating.

It must be said that if you make the decision to start using CBD for anxiety, to keep in mind that it isn’t a cure to an ailment (both physical and mental) but rather a tool. Kind of like exercising to lose weight, you also need to eat the right food in order to help the process. So, while CBD won’t “cure” your anxiety, a good phrase that sums up CBD oil well is that: it rather just turns the volume down. Let’s say you take a few drops of CBD and then magically came across a saber-toothed tiger. You certainly wouldn’t be calm about the situation and would most likely still experience fight or flight. Thank goodness we no longer live in the stone ages and don’t have to deal with those pesky saber-tooths. We do, however must deal with employment, unemployment, financial, relationship stress, trauma, or even just genetics. Your life could tick all the boxes but the thought of leaving your house or making a phone call or even just sitting at home doing absolutely nothing can fill you with so much fear and anxiety all because it could potentially be a part of your genetic makeup (this can be helped, don’t worry).

CBD Oil – What is it and how can it be used?

Let’s start with the basics, CBD is short for Cannabidiol and is one of the active (and non-psychoactive) ingredients found in the hemp plant. Cannabinoids are not only produced by other plants, likewise in the human body. One of the systems within the human body that the cannabinoid compound fits into is called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Therefore, this helps to support our cells and to keep a healthy immune system.

Back in the 90’s, scientists discovered a bunch of cells (found in mammals) called the Endocannabinoid System. Our ECS exists in our Central Nervous System (CNS), immune system, organs, tissue and glands. The ECS is quite the supportive system, it helps with our energy, memory, metabolism, immune function, sleep and autonomic nervous system.

So how does CBD and the ECS work together? CBD fits into the ECS receptors, so each time you use CBD, you’re “unlocking” your ECS. For some people this can happen almost instantly and for others it can take a couple of weeks to a couple of months to notice the benefits of CBD.

As a result, there has been an overwhelming amount of reports from people who claim some incredible benefits after using CBD. CBD can help with easing anxiety, stress management, insomnia, asthma, inflammation, other mental health conditions such as PTSD and bipolar disorder.

How can you use CBD and what is it good for?

CBD can be used in many ways depending on your needs. You can take it orally using drops, edibles, vaping, or use it topically.

CBD is quite subjective – In other words there is no real way to tell people how much they should take as people experience the effects differently depending on the dosage. It’s all about finding your ‘sweet spot’.

Our Products

Edibles/Consumables

Organic CBD Tinctures: Our Tinctures come in 10000mg and 300mg – Not only can they be used orally, moreover you can also use it topically as a serum or for any inflammation flare ups such as eczema. When using our tinctures, we generally recommend starting off with 1-2 drops daily in the morning and then increase gradually. This process allows you to “unlock” your endocannabinoid system. Once you feel like you’re experiencing the effects that CBD has to offer, you can then adjust the dosage to suit you. So, you can either increase the dosage or use it at different time of day, or both! People generally report the benefits of using our tinctures for anxiety, inflammation and insomnia (just to name a few).

Nasal inhalers: We have two different types of nasal inhalers. Uplifting – An awesome pairing of CBD and Eucalyptus ingredients to give you a bit of a pep in your step or if you’re needing something more relaxing to help wind down, our soothing inhaler (mixed with lavender) would be perfect for you.
